Appendicitis or inflammation of the Appendix is a common problem typically seen in younger patients. The appendix is a rudimentary organ that has lymph tissue. The appendix can become blocked which sets off a process of inflammation and subsequent infection. The typical symptoms are right lower abdominal pain, nausea, loss of appetite and fevers. It is diagnosed by clinical examination, blood tests and either Ultrasound or CT scan. Depending on the overall picture either surgery or medical treatment is recommended. Surgery can be done laparoscopically in most patients. If presentation is late and appendix has perforated either initial medical management or sometimes open surgery is advised.
Most of the patients only need couple of days stay in hospital after laparoscopic appendix removal.
