GASTRIC BYPASS: PROCEDURE, RISK, COST & MORE

Also known as a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, a Gastric Bypass is a surgical procedure that helps a person lose weight. The surgery changes the way a person’s stomach and small intestine handle the food that they eat. Since the stomach becomes smaller after a Gastric Bypass, the patient tends to feel full even if they consume less food than usual.

Typically, the surgery involves creating a small pouch from the stomach. This pouch is then connected directly to the small intestine. It means that the swallowed food will transfer from the bag to the small intestine, bypassing a major area of the stomach and the first section of the small intestine. In addition to helping in weight loss, Gastric Bypass surgery also reduces the risks of other health-related ailments, such as heart diseases, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. It is also often called a mini gastric bypass in Delhi.

When Should A Person Get A Gastric Bypass?

A person should get a Gastric Bypass surgery done when they are trying to lose their excess weight. Additionally, this may be a good option if they are obese and have not lost weight through exercise and diet. Furthermore, if one is suffering from, or is in the risk of one or more of the following health conditions in conjunction with their weight, they should go for a Gastric Bypass.

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Heart Diseases
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
  • High Cholesterol
  • Cancer
  • Stroke
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
  • Infertility

Gastric Bypass surgery is also a good option for a person if their BMI, or Body Mass Index is 40 or above, or weigh at least 45 kilograms more than their ideal weight. [1]

How Is A Gastric Bypass Surgery Performed?

Before The Procedure:

Before getting a mini gastric bypass in Delhi, there are some precautions that one must take. In addition to getting a complete physical exam, along with blood tests and an ultrasound of their gallbladder, the patient must also inform their doctor about any other health-related issues they may have.

Furthermore, the patient must also stop smoking a few weeks before the surgery and reduce their alcohol consumption. A week before the Gastric Bypass, the patient must stop taking any medications that make it difficult for the blood to clot, including aspirin, painkillers, vitamins, supplements and other drugs.

During The Procedure:

A Gastric Bypass takes anywhere between 1 to 2 hours and requires the patient to spend at least two to three nights at the hospital, for a quicker recovery without any complications. [2] Before beginning the surgery, the surgeon will first administer the patient with general anaesthesia to not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

The surgeon will then use staples to divide the patient’s stomach into a smaller upper section and a larger bottom section. The smaller top area of the abdomen will then become a pouch, where the food will go. Typically, this pouch has a size similar to walnut and can hold only about 28 grams of the food. It is due to this that the patient will eat less, feel fuller and subsequently lose weight. [3]

Next, the surgeon will connect the upper section of the stomach to the small intestine using a small hole in the pouch. Thus, the patient swallows will travel directly from the bag to the small intestine, thereby making the patient’s body absorb a lot fewer calories.

What Can One Expect After A Gastric Bypass Procedure?

After a Gastric Bypass procedure is done, the patient will need to stay in the hospital for two to three, sometimes four days. The patient will also need to walk a little and sit on the bed’s side after the surgery. In some cases, they may have a catheter to drain out the fluids from their intestine, along with a separate catheter in their bladder for urine disposal.

Additionally, the surgeon will recommend them to only consume liquids for the first three to four days after the procedure, followed by pureed or soft foods for a couple of weeks. Furthermore, a few months after a Gastric Bypass, the patient will be required to get regular medical check-ups and tests done.

For the first three to six months after a Gastric Bypass, the patient may also experience the following symptoms: [4]

  • Body aches
